Restylane Lip Injections as Lip Fillers

Restylane has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as an injectable filler in the United States. Cosmetic surgeons use it primarily for plumping up wrinkles and fine lines, and also lips decimated by the aging process. Restylane works by using a naturally occurring body substance as a filler, which virtually eliminates the risk of rejection, which sometimes happens with collagen. And rather than having to wait for results from an allergy test, patients can proceed immediately to restylane lip injections the same day.

Restylane in Use Since 1996

Restylane injections have been done since the mid 1960s with over a half million men and women having successfully had the procedure done. Restylane has been embraced by vegetarians seeking lip injections because restylane contains no animal product, nor does it cause allergic reactions like bovine collagen.

Restylane to Restore or Eliminate Wrinkles

Cosmetic surgeons use restylane to fill facial lines and folds, acne scars, or to augment the chin, lips, cheekbones, bridge of the nose and nipples. It is also being used to treat small face or hand bone defects. Restylane can also be mixed with another type filler and used to treat deep creases and lines, and will not interfere if later on the patient decides to have a face lift. The procedure is not permanent, however. The body does eventually break down restylane creating the need for touch up. These touch ups will have to be done every 6 to 12 months depending on the original treated area.

Restylane Lip Injection Procedure

Local anaesthetic is used when restylane is used for lip injections. But otherwise, most people, when given the choice, forego anesthesia before or during the procedure. Anesthesia is always recommended when the procedure takes place in a sensitive or touchy area, however. As with all types of injections, redness and swelling may occur. But the symptoms respond to mild pain medication and disappear completely in a couple of days. Treatments generally last no more than an hour with the patient able to return to regular activity as soon as they leave the doctor’s office. Doctors do recommend keeping the face still for about six hours following the procedure. In other words, don’t frown or let anyone make you laugh after treatment.

Restylane an In-Demand Treatment

People are literally flocking to have restylane lip injections and other facial treatments. The lack of waiting period, no allergic reactions and the need to touch up collagen treatments has boosted restylane into heavy rotation and popularity. Restylane is also healthier for interaction with the body causing fewer if any complications.

Cost and Availability and Side Effects of Restylane

Although it has been in use in the United States since 1996, the FDA did not grant approval until 2003, making restylane lip injections a relatively new procedure in America. For that reason it may be necessary to search out a larger city for having the procedure done by experienced cosmetic surgeons. New York and Miami, Florida are said to be the cities where the procedure costs the most. However, cost across the country varies from $500-$1000 per injection. Restylane is not free from side effects. The most common side effect is bruising and also pain. That is because restylane injections do not contain an anesthetic like collagen injections. Most restylane side effects are considered mild with roughly 1 in 2000 patients suffering a severe reaction. The side effects can last from a few days to several weeks.
