Radiance injection for lip enhancement is a procedure designed to give patients a fuller and more youthful aesthetic appearance. A person is considered a good prospect for radiance injections if they have thin lips and are not satisfied with their current appearance. The thinness of the lips can be caused by genetics, aging, wrinkling or even smoking. The procedure is done by injecting a material called hydroxyl apatite, known commercially as Radiesse, into the borders of the lips to produce a fuller, younger looking mouth.

What is Radiesse
Hydroxyl apatite is a gel made from calcium found in the bones of the human body. This gel is very popular for radiance lip enhancement because of its compatibility with the body. Being a natural body derivative, doctors like it because it’s not necessary to administer an allergy test prior to doing the procedure. An allergy test is usually always done prior to any other lip augmentation or enhancement. Another benefit of this gel is that a little goes a long way or at least a lot farther than collagen based products. It also leaves the patient with a smoother and more natural feeling and appearance than other collagen based products.

Radiance injections are not permanent. However they do last longer than most other lip enhancements.

FDA Regulation

It should be noted and the surgeon should tell you that while hydroxyl apatite has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in many procedures, it has not yet been specifically approved radiance injections in lip augmentations. It is approved for facial, dental, orthopedic surgery and vocal cord augmentation. Doctors and surgeons have used it for years in connection with these various medical procedures. Cosmetic approval is expected any time.

Associated Risks in Radiance Injections

Sometimes the patient suffers pain and swelling following the radiance injection lip enhancement treatments. In fact, radiance procedures are considered more painful than collagen treatments. The reason being that collagen injections are combined with lidocaine which is an anesthetic. In a radiance lip enhancement injection, surgeons routinely use sedatives as well as local anesthetic when performing the procedure in order to mitigate the pain.

One Serious Side Effect

Once in a while a patient will develop small white bumps below the surface of the skin. These bumps are actually calcium deposits from the gel that float to the surface requiring further treatment.

Cost and Availability

Radiance injections for lip enhancement are available nationwide in America. The cost will vary according to the surgeon, the exact procedure as well as the where the procedure is performed. Some parts of the country are more expensive than others, so it is very important to do some research if the procedure is not available in your area. Lip enhancement can cost anywhere from $300 to $5000 depending on who, where and when. New York and Miami are the cities where cosmetics costs are the most expensive.
