Recently Connie Culp has been in the news for the miracle that she helped in bringing about. She let the doctors do the path breaking facial transplant surgery on her.The doctors were successful and a life was spared of much emotional trauma for the rest of her life.
But she is not the first one. In fact it was another lady who had the courage to go under the doctor’s knife for a radical face transplant in the year 2007.
This French lady is Isabelle Dinoire who endured a 15 hour surgery to get back some normalcy to her facial features.
But what really tugged at my heart is not the pain the disfigured lady must have endured before the surgery. Of course she had to go through a very painful and emotionally disturbing stage. But think about the donor family. In the time of bereavement they considered donating body parts of their loved one who is no more with them. It must have been a very disturbing moment for them.
Yet they took a decision that helped ladies like Isabelle Dinoire and Connie Culp live like normal human beings again. We take so many things for granted. A beautiful skin, shining hair and pearl white teeth…..All these are different facets of beauty. And all these were destroyed in a few minutes for these two ladies .And subsequently their life changed for ever.
There must be many like these living in oblivion and in misery.
Just think a few minutes. We take care of our body so well. But the moment death comes we don’t need this body any more.
But some one else may be spared a lot of misery if we donate our body parts.
Of course vital body organs like liver, kidney, eyes are donated and used for transplantation in another one as life saving steps. Donations of these body parts are being done. But are other body part donation is of lesser importance?
And there has been ethical issues raised by some.
True, this is not a life saving situation. But is emotional trauma any less painful?
It is time we took decisions for the living as well for their feelings.
Radical thinking is necessary to bring about changes in such a crisis.
What is your opinion?
Are you considering body part donations both for vital organs as well as for other body parts that will help a fellow human being live like one?
