Body Dysmorphic Disorder|Are you a victim?

by Puspanjali on June 19, 2009

I have been writing a lot about natural lip enhancement as well as cosmetic lip enhancement for a long time.I have been researching along with my team for different ways to enhance the beauty of the lips using different artificial methods like lip implants, lip injections and different types of lip surgeries.

And then a friend of mine bemusedly asked me if I have heard of BDD.
I had not.But this did not stop me from doing a research on BDD.
BDD is acually the abbreviated form of “Body Dysmorphic Disorder”.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder is also known as Dysmorphophobia/Body dysmorphia(the fear of having a deformity).

This is a psychiatric condition in which the affected person is excessively concerned about and preoccupied by an imagined or minor defect in his or her physical features. This usually occurs in teenagers. But adults and children also sometime fall prey to this pretty serious psychological  disorder. In fact in acute cases if left untreated it results in suicides of the patient.
I found this YouTube video which shows in details the pain and agony of the BDD victims.

According to MayoClinic the following are the symptoms of BDD.

  • Preoccupation with your physical appearance.
  • Strong belief that you have an abnormality or defect in your appearance that makes you ugly.
  • Wearing excessive makeup or clothing to camouflage perceived flaws.
  • Frequently examining yourself in the mirror or, conversely, avoiding mirrors altogether .
  • Believing that others take special notice of your appearance in a negative way.
  • Frequent cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction.
  • Excessive grooming, such as hair plucking.
  • Feeling extremely self-conscious.
  • Refusing to appear in pictures.
  • Skin picking.
  • Comparing your appearance with that of others.
  • Avoiding social situations.

Treatment

Treatment for this kind of disorder is a three pronged approach.

  • Psychotherapy
  • Medications
  • Family and friend support system

Psychotherapy is used to make the patient aware of his/her problem as a mental problem rather than a physical problem.Counseling helps in this regard a lot.
So far as medicine is concerned it is a tricky situation.

There are no medications specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat body dysmorphic disorder. However, psychiatric medications used to treat other conditions, such as depression, can also be prescribed for body dysmorphic disorder.

Like all psychological problem this one also needs a support group to overcome the situation.Family and friends need to be understanding and help the patient heal.
I hope you get my point.
My posts on surgical enhancement of lips should not induce an excessive obsession about beauty.
There are many ways available to enhance the natural appearance without becoming overly obsessed with it.
